If you have had a terrible case of acne, you may feel as if you are the only one. You, however, are not. According to the American Association of Dermatology, it is the most common skin problem in the United States, affecting about 40 to 50 million Americans at any one time. While most people experience acne and breakouts as teenagers or young adults, acne can occur at any age. Acne is a skin disease that is driven by many different factors. Acne appears when a hair follicle or pore begins to get clogged with dead skin cells. Typically dead skin cells will rise to the surface of the pore and shed. When the body starts to produce more sebum (oil), it keeps our skin from drying out, causing the dead skin cells to stick together within the pore, unable to rise to the surface. Sometimes bacteria that live on our skin (C. acnes or previously called P.acnes) can also get inside the clogged pore. The sebum and dead skin cells within the pore create the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply quickly. Creating more inflammation, an increase in oil production, and without a way to escape, inflammation continues. White blood cells rush in to heal the surrounding cells, creating pustular (whitehead) or cystic acne if the inflammation is more severe. Types of acne lesions are:
