Raise your hand if this has happened to you: you decide you want to try a new product, let's say moisturizer. So you hop on your computer and go to your favorite store's website and enter moisturizer in the search bar. I just did it - 1776 results. Oh my, where to start? Then you start to scroll and notice all sorts of things: Packaging. Prices. Ingredient callouts. SPF. Wrinkles. Glow. HUH? Why are there so many options!!! You might try to refine your search: skin type, age, concerns, benefits. I have clients tell me all the time that they have spent HOURS trying to decide what products they should use. Refining. Researching. Digging. Even when you go shopping in person, it's not easy. The shelves are stocked. Every aisle brings new promises of skin solutions for problems you probably don't even have. Ultimately leaving you with a bathroom counter full of products that don't work or you are unsure of how to use them. I don't want you to go through this anymore. I want to help you feel more confident in making the right decision when shopping for a new skincare product. This isn't going to be quick, but I promise you it will be worth it! This is Part 1 of my 4 Part Series on choosing the right products for your skin. Get to know your skinKnowing and identifying your skin type as well as certain conditions is the first step in selecting your products. Here are a few questions and things to consider. IDENTIFY SKIN TYPE Many people don't know their skin type, which is ok! Here is a simple way to determine what your skin type is: After cleansing your face in the morning, what time of day do you notice your skin feels oily or looks shiny?
I have skin. DETERMINE SKIN CONDITION: What is happening with your skin? Your skin's condition communicates what it needs. Here are a few questions to ask yourself: Do you break out?
I break out. Are you sensitive to products, scents?
I (pick one) am sensitive/sensitive to some/am not sensitive to most products. Does your skin turn red easily?
I turn red _____________ . Do products ever sting or tingle when you apply them?
Products _____________ sting or tingle when I apply them. PERSONAL PREFERENCE Do you feel suffocated by a thick and heavy moisturizer, or do you love the feeling of it and can't get enough? Can't stand sunscreen? Is it the smell, texture, or does it make you break out? Do you prefer a foaming cleanser to a cream or oil cleanser? I ask clients what products they have used in the past, what they loved or didn't, and why. This helps me determine what may be a good fit for them. You are investing time and money into your skincare routine. You need to like - no, you need to LOVE the products you are using. If you don't enjoy using the product, you are unlikely to be consistent with it. CLIMATE SEASONAL ADJUSTMENTS In humid climates, or during summer months, you may prefer or need a lighter moisturizer, water and sweat resistant SPF, or maybe an exfoliating gel cleanser. In drier climates, or during the winter, you may opt for gentle, creamy or oil cleanser and heavier, nourishing moisturizer. TOPICAL PRESCRIPTIONS Some prescriptions (such as tretinoin, for example) can cause an increase in skin sensitivity when you begin using it. It is best to receive guidance from your dermatologist or trusted esthetician on what to pair or avoid with your topicals. Great job! Are you feeling like you have a better understanding of your skin now? Hold on to your skin statement, because we are going to use that later. It's the foundation; the rest of what I will talk about will build on it. Comments are closed.
