If you’re like most people, you more than likely have heard about the amazing benefits of using a retinoid (vitamin A) for your skin. But have you also heard about the “retinization period” that often comes with it? This is the period of time when your skin is adjusting to the new product which can cause some temporary side effects that may seem scary at first. But don't worry! These side effects are normal and usually go away after a few weeks. And in the end, the results are totally worth it! Here’s what you need to know about retinization. what is retinizationRetinization is a term that describes the period of time when your skin is adjusting to the use of a topical retinoid (vitamin A). Topical retinoids assist in “cell organization,” which means they help regulate and optimize the healthy processes of our skin cells. One of the effects of retinoids is an increased rate of cellular renewal (also referred to as cellular turnover). During the retinization period, your skin may experience some short-term side effects as it adjusts to the new product. These can include:
These symptoms typically start around 2-3 weeks of use and can last up to 6 weeks (but usually last around 4-5 weeks). The severity of symptoms can vary based on the kind of retinoid being used, existing skin conditions, and the individual’s skin disposition. how to manage retinizationWhile the retinization period can be a bit of a rollercoaster ride for your skin, there are a few things you can do to lessen and shorten the purging period. ▸ One strategy is to start with a “Low & Slow” approach. This means starting with a low dose or less potent form of retinoid (like retinal) to allow your skin to acclimate slowly. You can work up to higher potency or a more “active” form of retinoid. ▸ Another strategy is to alternate applications. You can adjust to a new retinoid by applying it on alternating days (e.g. 3 nights per week) for several weeks until acclimation is achieved. ▸ Buffering is a technique is another application method to control sensitivity. To buffer the skin, apply the retinoid after moisturizer to slow or dilute the delivery of vitamin A. Supporting the skin’s lipid barrier with barrier-mimicking ingredients like ceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterol such as Intensive Nourishing Cream or an Epionce Renewal is helpful. ▸ Choosing the right formula can also help. For more sensitive clients or first-time users, opting for a gentle retinal formula will assist in supporting the skin’s barrier function during application. These formulas are best for dryer, dehydrated, or sensitive skin as the “buffer” is built-in. Another option for those that are unable to tolerate Vitamin A is an Epionce Lytic. Finally, it’s important to remember that during the retinization period, you must use sun ☀️ protection to avoid further sensitivity caused by sun exposure. Making it work for youThe retinization period may seem scary at first, but with a little knowledge and preparation, you can manage it with ease. By starting slow and being patient, your skin will adjust to the new product and begin to reap the benefits of topical retinoids. Remember to always consult with a skincare professional before starting a new product or routine to ensure the best results. Here are some products that I recommend to help minimize and avoid retinization: Gentle and effective retinol, such as one of the 3 Osmosis MD Vitamin A Serums Calm, Correct, or Renew. If you are unable to tolerate a retinol, one of the Epionce Lytics are a great option. Epionce Intensive Nourishing Cream and Epionce Enriched Firming Mask are must haves, especially if you are using a prescription retinoid such as tretinoin or Retin-A. Use these before you apply your chosen retinoid as a buffering technique to minimize retinization. I'd love to help you find your personalized solution!
