Dry, red, flaky and irritated - these are just a few of ways your skin may change once the temperatures drop. Factors like lower humidity levels, cold and windy outside temperatures, and blasting the heat indoors all deplete our skin of its Natural Moisture Factor (NMF), leaving it unable to replenish itself. Here are 3 tips to help keep your skin healthy during the colder winter months! Tip 1: Give Your Skin a Break Less is more, especially when your skin feels sensitive. Avoid overusing sensitizing ingredients like retinoids, AHAs, vitamin C and fragrances. Using them less frequently or stopping entirely during the colder months may be required. Tip 2: Don't Depend on Oils While oils feel nice, using them alone can dry out and further dehydrate your skin. They lack the occlusive properties needed to trap water in the epidermis. Instead, opt for a moisturizer that mimics your skin's barrier. Tip 3: Protect Don't skip the SPF during the winter, even when it is gloomy and raining. Not only does UV reflect off of the wet ground and snow, but it also contributes to a depleted barrier and increases sensitization.
